after suffering
a stroke over the Thanksgiving holidays at the age of 88. His wife
and companion of 66 years, Vonda, died earlier this year after
suffering a long illness.
Don
was employed in the food service sector before
joining the burgeoning
temperature recorder industry in the 1960's, working for Cox
Recorders and DTR. When he joined Marathon in 1991, he brought
with him a wealth of knowledge to the company as well as his
sense of humor.

June 15, 2005 — Marathon
Products, Inc., is pleased to announce that it has supplied Professors
Joyce Lundberg
of Carleton University and Donald McFarlane of the Claremont Colleges,
with Marathon's high precision edl temperature
data loggers to investigate in detail the unique microclimates
created by thousands
of flying-fox
bats
in the caves of Mt. Elgon. The loggers
will be placed throughout the largest cave, and in particular within the
very center of the bat roost where they will record daily fluctuation
in air temperature
as the bats go about their lives.
Mt. Elgon, in Kenya, is an old volcano, penetrated
by a series of spectacular caves. Unlike most caves that
are formed by the
action of water on limestone, or by the formation of flowing
lava, the caves of Mt.
Elgon
are,
quite
uniquely, formed by elephants
and their kin. Elephants enter
the caves at night and "tusk" the
soft volcanic rocks from the walls, consuming them for their high
salt and mineral content.
Over the course of millennia, aided by collapse and the activities
of a variety of other forest animals, these caves have been excavated
hundreds of yards into the mountain. Today, the Mt. Elgon caves
provide vital habitat for hyraxes, bushbuck, leopard, hyena,
and huge colonies of bats.
